The Universe Next Door by James W. Sire5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() In a world of ever-increasing diversity, The Universe Next Door offers a unique resource for understanding the variety of worldviews that claim the allegiance of mind and heart. The Universe Next Door has been translated into over a dozen languages and has been used as a text at over one hundred colleges and universities in courses ranging from apologetics and world religions to history and English literature. New discussion questions will help readers reflect more deeply on the ideas in each chapter. The sixth edition, updated by Sire's longtime editor Jim Hoover, features new explanatory sidebars, helpful charts comparing worldviews and illustrating their historical flow, and a chapter on challenges to a Christian worldview in the twenty-first century. Critiquing each worldview within its own frame of reference and in comparison to others, Sire encourages readers to wrestle with life's biggest questions and examine the core beliefs and commitments on which they are building their lives. ![]() Intertwined with this analysis, he presents an overview of intellectual history giving insight into the current state of Western thought and culture. For more than thirty years, The Universe Next Door has set the standard for a clear, readable introduction to worldviews. Using his widely influential model of eight basic worldview questions, James Sire examines prominent worldviews that have shaped the Western world: ![]() For more than forty years, The Universe Next Door has set the standard for a clear, readable introduction to worldviews. ![]() Ghostgirl lovesick5/10/2023 ![]() On top of this, Hurley's writing style is irritating. Charlotte, the original Ghostgirl, seems to be a secondary character in this volume. I didn't care one iota what happened to anyone, because there were no characters worth caring about. There is no humor in this volume at all, unless you find mean girls sniping at each other nonstop for 300 pages the pinnacle of humor. ![]() What little character development they had in the earlier books was tossed out the window for this one, in favor of yet another bitch in the cast. Even Charlotte and Scarlett, who were the redeeming features of the first book, and not too bad in the second, are both just like all the rest of them. Just throw-away characters taking up space so the girls will have someone to swoon over.Īll the other characters - every single one of them, living and dead, is a selfish, narcissistic, popularity and fashion obsessed, mean-spirited girl. ![]() There are only two male characters (one living, Damon, and one dead, Eric) and they are both void of personality. ![]() This third (Oh, Lord, why did I read it?) is pretty close to the worst book I've ever read all the way to the end. It's wasn't very well written, but it was fun enough. The first book in this series had a clever concept, and some funny episodes. ![]() The Emperor's Wolf by J.C. Lastly as I continue to work my way through this novel, I began to realize in comparison to Einstein (the dog) just how dumb my own golden retriever was most of the time. ![]() That was Vince Nasco the hitman, he was so psychotically retarded and I began to really detest his internal dialogue. One character really began to grate on my nerves. Finally, I got back to reading and once past the slow section the book picked up the pace nicely and was completed in a short amount of time. During which time I really didn't want to trudge through so I decided to read another book instead. ![]() However, there came a slow stage shortly after. While reading this book I was glad that it opened up quite quickly with the events that transpire. ![]() Tom bissell the room5/9/2023 ![]() Wiseau spent $6 million of his own money on his film, but despite the efforts of the disbelieving (and frequently fired) crew and embarrassed (and frequently fired) actors, the movie made no sense. Sestero's nascent acting career first sizzled, then fizzled, resulting in Wiseau's last-second offer to Sestero of co-starring with him in The Room, a movie Wiseau wrote and planned to finance, produce, and direct-in the parking lot of a Hollywood equipment-rental shop. Wiseau seemed never to have read the rule book on interpersonal relationships (or the instructions on a bottle of black hair dye), yet he generously offered to put the aspiring actor up in his LA apartment. Wiseau's scenes were rivetingly wrong, yet Sestero, hypnotized by such uninhibited acting, thought, "I have to do a scene with this guy." That impulse changed both of their lives. ![]() ![]() Nineteen-year-old Greg Sestero met Tommy Wiseau at an acting school in San Francisco. ![]() Severance ling ma cover5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() In one scene, a mother sets the dining room table, over and over and over, no longer a person, just a shell of one stuck on an endless loop through a moment from the past. “Fevered” victims re-enact the same scenes and actions in their homes, over and over, madly, until they die or are put out of their misery by Bob and his gang. ![]() The virus - Shen Fever, it is called in the book - zombifies its victims by destroying their brains with obsessive nostalgia for the past. ![]() Ma sees this nostalgia as destructive, even deadly. Everyone in the band lives in a state of paranoia and fear of Bob, who carries guns and forces the group to listen to long lectures on the meaning of life. The swift changes in mood between the lyrical past and the horrific present lend the novel texture and a sense of propulsion and suspense. Post-disaster, Ma injects menace and violence into Chen’s story, as she heads to Chicago with a band of survivors led by a frightening cult figure named Bob. I’d always felt fond of it, maybe because it was the least ostentatious Bible I’d produced. ![]() The ribbon markers were made of sateen instead of silk. The book block edges boasted copper-hued spray edge duller compared to the more expensive gold gilding. The cover was made of leather-like polyurethane instead of leather. In order to hit the publisher’s target cost, substitutions had been made. The Daily Grace Bible was an everyday Bible for casual use, but Three Crosses Publishing also wanted to imbue the product with a high-value feel of an heirloom. ![]() Last chance books kelsey rodkey5/9/2023 ![]() He can bother her all he wants-nothing will distract Lahey from her goal of one-upping Summer.īut as the party creeps closer, the panic sets in.Ĭan a matchmaker ever really meet her own match?.
